Edge Evolve Seizes the Moment and Secures the Future

The benefit of involvement in professional bodies and organisations

In the current economic climate, organisations are often loath to spend money and/ or resources on what may be seen as non-essentials such as volunteer organisations and professional societies.

However, in a bold move, Edge Evolve has chosen to actively participate and sponsor one international society’s Southern African affiliate. DAMA SA has now been “operational” for almost 2 years. Although the affiliation was officially established in 2006 with the creation of the non-profit entity, the next few years were fraught with trying to form a viable membership offering as well as formally introduce the society to the business world.

This was finally accomplished at the end of 2008 when the then Membership Director, Sue Geuens, CDMP who had been with Edge Evolve for just over a year met with Ana Moreira, CDMP head of Edge’s Data Management section to discuss a possible future role for Edge Evolve as a sponsor for DAMA SA. Their plan was two-fold – to inaugurate the chapter by inviting an internationally renowned speaker to officially open the chapter and to form the beginning of a sponsorship offering for Corporate Members. A brainstorming session resulted in CEO, Manny Moreira offering to sponsor the inaugural event by bringing to South Africa, Dr Peter Aiken, DAMA International’s current president. Not only was Edge Evolve the first official DAMA SA sponsor, they have continued to provide a service to DAMA SA as their official website and email server sponsors, thus allowing the affiliate the rare ability to have a website and DAMA SA specific email addresses from the first date of active membership.

Due to the foresight of the Edge Evolve management team and the Data Management “Diva’s” this relationship has proven to be extremely beneficial to both.

Initially, these benefits were more resource than organizationally beneficial with Edge Evolve resources being exposed to many Data Management professionals and resources both locally and internationally. For example, Sue and Ana have both attended a number of international conferences, as guests and speakers. By enabling resources to attend conferences, chapter meetings, vendor days, workshops, etc, Edge Evolve has invested in the future – both for their resources and their clients. Clients can now be assured that Edge Evolve resources are not only committed Data Management Consultants, but that they are actively remaining at the forefront of data management knowledge and expertise. Edge Evolve has also chosen to not only purchase the DAMA DMBOK (Data Management Body of Knowledge) but also to map this BOK to their Data Management Framework (EDGE3). In doing so, Edge Evolve ensures that clients who are enabling their own data management framework are able to leverage off the very best knowledge available both locally and internationally.

The CDMP certification recently obtained by two Edge Evolve resources is a further example and benefit of having been participative in the formation and sponsoring of DAMA SA.

Both Sue and Ana are founder members and are currently sitting on the Board of Directors. In their roles as DAMA SA Directors, they attend most if not all of the local events both as organizers and contributors. Their exposure to the CDMP, the ICCP and to DAMA I encouraged them to undertake these exams, and with the assistance of Edge Evolve, both attended the EDW Conference in March 2010, wrote and passed these exams.

The benefit to clients has been that Edge Evolve can now offer two formally certified Data Management professionals on any data management project. Clients thus have the assurance and comfort that their DM project receives attention from some of the best-trained resources in Southern Africa, ones who have received an internationally recognized certification.

Most recently, Edge Evolve has become the first official corporate member entitled to display the DAMA SA Corporate Member Logo on their website and certain marketing documentation. A further indication that Edge Evolve is firmly on the Data Management map and is there to stay.
